Obituary for Walter H. Rohde

Walter H.  Rohde
Walter (Walt) Howard Rohde passed away April 30, 2018 at his home in Lebanon, Oregon at age 95. Walt was born on September 25, 1922 in DeSpain Gulch, Oregon. He was the son of William C. and Adelia (Steffen) Rohde; the youngest of two boys, the oldest being Willard. Walt attended elementary school in Pendleton, Oregon. He went on to attend high school in Monroe, Washington; residing with his grandparents Herman and Lena Steffen.
Walt began college at the University of Washington. With the advent of the WWII he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942. As a Marine, Walt was in the campaigns on Ryukyu Island, Okinawa, and was part of the initial occupation force of Japan.
After the war, Walt continued his education at Washington State University. At Washington State, Walt was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and was a collegiate athlete in wrestling.
Upon graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture from WSU, Walt took on many endeavors. He was a rancher, a building supply store owner, a hospital maintenance engineer, a Coca Cola distributor, and a building contractor.
On September 15, 1987 he married Alice Miriam Nelson (Wood) and shortly after he moved to Lebanon, Oregon as manager/owner of Wood’s Trailer Park. While operating the park, Walt and Alice found time to travel the globe; visiting every continent, with the exception of Antarctica.
Walt lived his life to the fullest. He loved hunting, gambling, traveling, camping, and writing. He wrote many cowboy poems, and had a story of about camping and hunting published.
Walt is survived by his wife Alice; his stepdaughter and her husband, Nancy and Jerry White of Roseburg, Oregon; their children, Brett White of Roseburg, Oregon and Katherine White of Albuquerque, New Mexico; his nephew and spouse, Ross and Margie Rohde of San Francisco, California. Walt was pre-deceased by his parents and brother.
Celebration of life services will be held at the Lebanon American Legion, 480 Main Street at 11:00am on Saturday, May 19, 2018.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children sent in care of Huston-Jost Funeral Home, 86 W. Grant St., Lebanon, OR 97355.
